Music in the city, in the summer!

Toronto Summer Music Academy

July 15 - August 5, 2012

2012 marks the seventh anniversary of the Toronto Summer Music Academy, which will run from July 15 to August 5 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Academy has been conceived to provide exceptionally gifted young musicians with an opportunity to study with international faculty of the highest quality and reputation, learning from their experience and musicianship. With limited enrollment, study is intense and enriching and provides students with a chance to interact with the faculty and other emerging professionals.

All participants will receive a full fellowship covering tuition. Housing will be provided where possible with participants placed with host families in private residences and/or in university residences.

2012 Academy Programs

The Chamber Music Institute (July 15 to August 5)

The Chamber Music Institute for piano and strings welcomes individuals and pre-formed ensembles of exceptional quality for three weeks of intensive coaching sessions, rehearsals and performances. The focus is on learning through performance where the young artists will perform alongside our senior artists as mentors. With an enrollment limited to 18, participating young artists work with a distinguished international faculty in an intimate, collegial atmosphere. Individual instrumentalists will be placed in chamber groups with at least one artist mentor per group. Rehearsing and performing chamber music is the ideal medium for communicating traditions of approach and interpretation of the literature for small ensemble.

The Art of Song program (July 15 to July 29)

This program, for a small cohort of eight singers and four pianists, is devoted to the study and performance of art song. During this two-week session, participants study with all faculty members, voice and piano, thus receiving advice from a variety of musical traditions and perspectives. The session will also offer detailed study of text, diction and action coaching. Our goal is to provide the selected young artists the luxury of total immersion in Art Song in a community of artists from around the world.

Academy Facilities

Rehearsals, classes and coaching take place in the Edward Johnson Building, home of the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. Individual practice rooms and several rehearsal spaces with pianos are available to Toronto Summer Music Academy students.

The Edward Johnson Building houses: a music library which is the main research music collection in Canada and includes a vast collection of sound recordings in the Sniderman Recording Archives, and Walter Hall, one of the city's major chamber music halls. It is located on the main campus of the University of Toronto in midtown Toronto, on the subway line, and close to the city's libraries, concert halls, galleries, museums and theatres.
